Aberdeen Group: Management and Governance: Planning for an Optimized SOA Application Lifecycle
Between November 2006 and January 2007, Aberdeen Group examined the SOA management strategies of more than 200 companies across a variety of geographies, industries and company revenues. Aberdeen supplemented this online survey effort with telephone interviews with select survey respondents, gathering additional information on SOA management strategies, experiences, and results. The study aimed to identify emerging best practices for SOA operations management and governance, and provide a framework by which readers could assess their own organization’s capabilities and maturity.

Management and Governance: The Key to SOA Lifecycle Cost Reduction
According to the survey results examined in this Aberdeen report, companies primarily deploy Web services or a service-oriented architecture (SOA) to reduce application development costs, especially by reusing services, and to gain IT agility to meet business needs. The potential for cost reduction, however, is diminished for 33-50% of companies because of SOA operations and development problems. Others are reaping the expected benefits of their SOAs by using SOA-specific methodologies, processes, and technologies, including those for SOA management, governance, and project management, development, and testing.
